Overlapping strikes disrupt Palma airport through Aug. 8

Remote workers flying to or from Spain's Balearic Islands face longer queues, baggage delays and possible schedule changes as two labor disputes overlap at Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) through Aug. 8.

What's happening

A Balearic metal-sector strike started July 27 and runs through July 30, covering airport maintenance and technical staff at Palma, Ibiza and Menorca. Reduced staffing can create bottlenecks at all three airports, even for airlines not directly involved.

Separately, ground-handling workers with Swissport are staging partial strikes at Palma on July 28, Aug. 1, Aug. 4 and Aug. 8. Each walkout runs from 7 a.m. to noon and again from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., hitting check-in, baggage handling and ramp operations.

The biggest risk falls on July 28, when the sectorwide action overlaps with the Swissport strike at Palma. Carriers reported to use Swissport at Palma include TUI, Condor, TAP Air Portugal, Air Canada and Etihad. Passengers on other airlines could still hit knock-on delays as operations get congested.

Neither dispute closes the airport or changes Spain's entry requirements.

What it means for nomads

If you're routing through the Balearics in early August, build in extra buffer time. Check messages from your airline before heading to the airport, complete online check-in where possible, and allow more time for bag drop and connections, especially on July 28.

Spain's minimum-service rules make mass cancellations less likely, but delays and long lines remain probable during the strike windows. If your flight is cancelled, EU passenger rights can entitle you to reimbursement or rerouting, plus meals or accommodation where applicable.

Keep in mind that cash compensation isn't guaranteed. Strikes by an outside ground-handling company may count as extraordinary circumstances under EU rules, which can exempt airlines from payouts, though they still owe you care during qualifying delays. If you have flexibility, avoiding the morning and evening strike windows may spare you the worst of the queues.
