New Zealand moves visitor visa applications to digital portal from Sept. 24
If you're planning a scouting trip or short stay in New Zealand, take note of how you'll file your paperwork. Immigration New Zealand is retiring its legacy visa forms and shifting most visitor visa applications to its enhanced Immigration Online platform, with the main change taking effect on Sept. 24.
Importantly, the underlying visa criteria are not changing. This is a move to how applications are lodged and tracked, not a change to who qualifies or what documents you need to prove.
What changed
According to Immigration New Zealand, Group Visitor Visa and Tour Escort Visitor Visa applications already moved to the new system on Aug. 24. From Sept. 24, standard visitor visa applications will open exclusively on the upgraded portal, meaning anyone submitting from that date must use the new interface.
There's a hard deadline for people mid-way through the old process. Draft applications started in the legacy portal can still be completed and submitted through Oct. 7. On Oct. 8, any remaining legacy drafts will be permanently deleted. If you miss that cutoff, you'll have to create a new profile and re-enter everything from scratch.
Applications already lodged before the changeover will keep processing normally, and document uploads for those remain accessible until a final decision is made.
What it means for nomads
Remote workers using visitor visas for short stays or to scout New Zealand as a base will now handle the whole process—submission, tracking, and responding to requests for more information—through a single online dashboard. You'll need to create an account and provide:
- A valid passport and a compliant digital photograph
- Proof of travel itineraries and accommodation
- Bank statements showing sufficient funds
- Supporting invitations or business documents, where relevant
On the financial side, Immigration New Zealand lists required funds of 400 NZD per month if your accommodation is prepaid, or 1,000 NZD per month without prepaid accommodation.
The practical takeaway: if you have an unfinished application sitting in the old system, finish and submit it before Oct. 7, or you'll lose the work. If you're starting fresh after Sept. 24, use the Immigration Online platform from the outset. New Zealand does not currently offer a dedicated digital nomad visa, so the visitor visa remains the common route for remote workers visiting short-term—making a smooth application process worth getting right.
