Morocco Suspends Visa Authorization Letters for Taiwanese Travelers

Taiwanese passport holders have lost their standard route into Morocco after the country reportedly suspended its visa authorization letter process, with no replacement channel announced. The change affects tourists, business travelers, transit passengers and anyone eyeing longer stays under Morocco's residency framework.

What changed

According to notices circulated by Taiwanese travel operators, Morocco stopped accepting visa authorization letter applications from Taiwanese travelers on July 23, 2026. One report cites an internal cutoff of July 20. The letter, known as the VCL, is the document Taiwanese nationals normally present at a Moroccan airport to receive an entry stamp of 14 or 15 days. Travelers paid roughly the equivalent of 2,000 yen in local currency on arrival to convert the letter into an entry visa.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on July 24 that it was checking the reports and had instructed overseas missions to seek clarification. As of that date, Rabat had not issued a public explanation and Taiwan had received no formal reply. It remains unclear whether the pause is administrative or a policy shift.

Lion Travel, one of Taiwan's largest agencies, has halted acceptance of Morocco visa applications and is refunding deposits. Travelers holding a passport from a country with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to Morocco are not affected.

What it means for nomads

If you hold a Taiwanese passport and were planning a Morocco trip, there is currently no established alternative to board a flight or clear immigration. Morocco also requires a transit visa for Taiwan nationals, so even connecting through the country is affected.

The previous VCL application pipeline took one to two months and required a passport copy, application form, photos, round-trip flight booking, hotel booking, bank statement, ID copy and travel insurance, all filed through the Moroccan Embassy in Japan. Because of that lead time, anyone with a departure inside 60 days should assume the trip won't happen on the original dates, even if intake reopens soon.

Taiwan's MOFA is advising citizens to carefully evaluate any planned Morocco trip and to avoid booking non-refundable flights or accommodation until the situation clarifies. If you are a Taiwanese nomad with existing plans, monitor official updates from Taiwan's foreign ministry and the Moroccan Embassy in Japan, confirm your status before committing to any travel, and keep bookings flexible until a replacement process or explanation is announced.
