Egypt to Charge Flat $15 Administrative Fee on All Visas from 2027

Egypt is standardizing its visa charges with a flat $15 administrative fee that applies to all entry and transit visas from January 1, 2027. The change comes under a government decree published on August 30, 2026, which aims to replace the mix of fee structures that previously varied across different ports and consulates.

What changed

Under Decree No. 2553 of 2026, signed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Egypt will apply a single $15 administrative charge across all entry points and diplomatic missions. That is a 25% increase over the $12 levy set for 2026.

Importantly, the $15 is a surcharge added on top of the standard visa fee, not a replacement for it. It also covers select consular services, including some visa extensions and consular certifications. Travelers must pay in US dollars or the local foreign currency equivalent, whether they are arriving at an airport, a land border, a seaport, or applying at an Egyptian embassy abroad.

The fee applies broadly to foreign nationals who need a visa or consular processing:

  • Entry visas for tourists and remote workers buying a visa on arrival or through a consulate.
  • Transit visas for passengers on layovers that require passing through border control.
  • Consular services such as certain visa extensions and certifications.

What it means for nomads

For most visitors, $15 is a minor line item. But the impact depends on how you travel. If you stay in Egypt on a single visa for the length of your trip, the added cost is negligible.

The math changes for anyone who crosses in and out frequently. Nomads who do regular visa runs or move repeatedly across the region will pay the surcharge on every border crossing, on top of the base visa cost each time. Over months of movement, those charges add up.

The unified fee does bring one practical benefit: predictability. With a single baseline across all crossing points and missions, you can budget more accurately and avoid surprises from inconsistent pricing at different ports.

If Egypt is part of your plans for 2027, factor the $15 into your visa budget from the start of the year, and keep some US dollars on hand, since payment is required in dollars or the foreign currency equivalent rather than local currency.
