Contour Airlines launches nonstop St. Thomas–Sint Maarten flights Oct. 5

Getting between the U.S. Virgin Islands and Sint Maarten is about to get simpler. Contour Airlines begins nonstop service between Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas and Princess Juliana International Airport in Sint Maarten on Oct. 5, connecting the two Caribbean hubs with a flight of roughly one hour.

What changed

The route runs twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays, using 30-seat regional jets with extra legroom, complimentary snacks and inflight service.

Monday flights leave St. Thomas at 11:35 a.m. and land in Sint Maarten at 12:30 p.m., with the return departing at 1:15 p.m. and arriving at 2:10 p.m. Friday flights leave St. Thomas at 12:35 p.m., reaching Sint Maarten at 1:35 p.m., and return at 2:30 p.m., arriving at 3:25 p.m.

There is no midweek service at launch, so travel outside Mondays and Fridays will still require a connecting flight or other regional transport. Tickets are sold through Contour's website, its customer service line and travel agencies.

Passport and entry rules

Because the route links the U.S. Virgin Islands with Dutch Sint Maarten, it is an international flight and passengers pass through immigration and customs in both directions.

U.S. citizens generally do not need a passport for domestic travel between the U.S. mainland, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, but they will need a valid passport to enter Sint Maarten. U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules apply on the return to St. Thomas.

Other nationalities must meet Dutch Caribbean entry requirements for Sint Maarten and U.S. entry requirements for the return trip, which may include a visa or ESTA. Longer stays could require separate residence or work authorization under Sint Maarten's residency rules.

What it means for nomads

If you split time between the USVI and Sint Maarten, the direct hop removes the hassle of connecting through another hub and makes short trips between the islands far more practical. The catch is the limited schedule: with only Monday and Friday departures at launch, itineraries need to be planned around those days.

The key point for anyone used to traveling to St. Thomas passport-free is that this leg is international. Check your passport's validity well before departure and confirm any visa or ESTA obligations for both islands, since the two ends of the route sit under different immigration systems.
