Brunei citizens keep 14-day visa-free entry to Taiwan through July 2027

Taiwan has renewed its trial visa-free entry program for Brunei passport holders, keeping 14-day short stays open through July 31, 2027. The arrangement had been set to expire on July 31, 2026, but Taipei extended it for another year, closing what would have been a gap in access starting August 1, 2026.

What changed

According to the source, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended the 14-day visa-free program covering Brunei, Thailand and the Philippines for the period from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027. None of the terms changed. Brunei ordinary passport holders and Certificate of Identity holders can still enter Taiwan without applying for a visa in advance, for stays of up to 14 days. The program is tied to Taiwan's New Southbound Policy and has been renewed in one-year increments since 2018–2019, conditioned on tourism and economic outcomes.

Diplomatic and official passport holders are excluded, as are airline and vessel crew arriving to report for duty.

The conditions

Entry is free, but it is not automatic. Border officers can turn travelers away if the paperwork does not hold up. The source lists these requirements: a passport valid at least six months, onward travel, accommodation details, proof of funds, and a Taiwan Arrival Card.

The 14-day count starts the day after arrival. The stay cannot be extended, and travelers cannot switch to a work or residence permit from inside Taiwan. Anyone planning employment, study or a long-term stay must apply for the appropriate visa from abroad.

What it means for nomads

For Bruneians using Taiwan as a regional hub, the renewal removes uncertainty about access for the coming year. But the 14-day cap and no-extension rule mean it works only for short trips, not as a base for remote work inside Taiwan. Anyone routing through Taipei between trips needs to plan reset flights carefully, since overstaying carries penalties and can jeopardize future entry.

The extension also complements a move in the other direction: on June 23, 2025, Brunei replaced visa-on-arrival with 14-day visa-free entry for Taiwanese passport holders. That gives dual-direction short-stay access, which is useful for regional business travelers and remote workers who split time between the two jurisdictions.
