Australia Adds Streamlined Repeat Visitor Visa Option for PNG Citizens

Australia has rolled out a streamlined online option, effective July 1, 2026, that lets eligible citizens of Papua New Guinea lodge repeat applications for the subclass 600 visitor visa through ImmiAccount. The change is aimed at repeat travellers with a clean visa history, not at every passport holder, and it does not create visa-free travel or guarantee approval.

What changed

The simplified process covers the Tourist stream and the Business Visitor stream. To qualify, a PNG citizen must have previously held a subclass 600 visa in one of those streams, with that application finalised within the past five years, plus a record of immigration compliance. Eligibility is checked automatically inside ImmiAccount rather than self-declared.

Applicants sign into ImmiAccount, open the "List of Applications," and look for the streamlined option at the bottom right of their last finalised subclass 600 application. If the system recognises the applicant, it displays a pre-filled form; if not, it directs them to start a fresh application. Older applications lodged through a different account, agent, or email address may need to be imported first.

The Australian High Commission in PNG said the move "supports Australia's partnership" with the country. A separate cost change also began July 1, 2026: eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens may see lower visa fees, which applicants should confirm using the Visa Pricing Estimator.

What it means for travellers

The streamlined route reduces repeat form-filling, but it does not remove the genuine visitor test. Even with pre-filled data, applicants should update passport details, addresses, employment, business and travel history before submitting. Home Affairs still assesses visitor, health, character and financial requirements case by case, and a past grant does not guarantee a new one.

Stay periods depend on the stream and the individual decision. The Tourist stream can allow up to 12 months and covers holidays and visits to family or friends. The Business Visitor stream generally grants three months for meetings, conferences and negotiations. Crucially for remote workers, neither stream permits taking a job, ongoing paid work, study, or long-term residence in Australia — those plans require a different visa pathway.

Biometric requirements remain in place. Applicants in PNG must provide a facial photo and fingerprints at an Australian Biometric Collection Centre in Port Moresby or Lae, booked in advance through VFS Global. Some eligible applicants may receive longer visa validity, but Home Affairs sets the length case by case.

Eligibility is individual: a spouse, parent or child cannot rely on a relative's prior visa. Each family member needs accurate documents and consistent travel information, and the grant letter controls the approved stay, entry conditions and whether the visa allows single or multiple entries.
