Airwallex adds Wero for 10-second euro payments across Europe
Airwallex has added the European payment scheme Wero to its platform in beta, letting merchants and freelancers accept instant euro transfers from European customers—even if their business is registered outside the EU. For nomads billing European clients, it offers a faster, cheaper alternative to traditional SWIFT wires.
What changed
Wero payments on Airwallex move bank-to-bank in under 10 seconds, 24/7, running on the SEPA Instant Payments rails. Transfers process and settle in euros on a same-day (T+0) schedule, with amounts allowed from €0.50 up to €100,000 per transaction.
The service is live for merchants accepting payments from customers in Germany and Belgium, with France scheduled for October. The wider Wero network reaches roughly 55 million users across Belgium, France and Germany, and Luxembourg banks are joining this month.
Airwallex lists Wero eligibility for businesses registered in Hong Kong, the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK, the US, Japan and Canada. Merchants must contact their Airwallex account manager to join the beta.
On the payment side, desktop shoppers scan a QR code with their banking app while mobile users are redirected straight to the app. QR codes expire after 10 minutes.
What it means for nomads
The key point is that freelancers and small operators incorporated outside the EU can now accept instant euro bank payments from European customers without opening a European entity. That removes a common friction point for remote workers running a business through, say, a US LLC while serving clients in the eurozone.
The cost difference is significant. A traditional SWIFT wire on a €5,000 payment can carry $15 to $50 in correspondent fees and take two to five business days to settle. Wero replaces that with near-instant, fee-free incoming transfers.
Airwallex illustrates the math with a consultant billing €4,000 a month to German clients through a US LLC: incoming wires typically cost $25 to $45 each, plus a 1% to 2% FX spread if converted on arrival. Routing those invoices through Wero into an Airwallex euro balance drops the per-payment wire fee to zero and lets the holder defer currency conversion until they choose. Over 12 invoices a year, that's roughly $300 to $540 in wire fees alone, before FX savings.
The main caveats are geographic and procedural: coverage is currently limited to Germany and Belgium (with France coming in October), the feature is in beta, and joining requires going through your Airwallex account manager. For nomads with European client bases, though, it's worth checking eligibility against the cost of local incorporation.
